Chiang Mai offers a wide-range of shopping experiences and an incredible selection of shops where one can buy everything from bargain souvenirs to expensive handicrafts to the latest fashions.  Chiang Mai is a shopper’s paradise.





Night Bazaar
This is probably the most famous night market in all of Thailand, and the shopping and the dining options are endless. It can take a serious shopper several nights to discover everything here. Most street vendor shops are usually open by dusk and stay open until midnight.  This is a famous place for both locals and tourists and should not be missed.

San Kamphaeng
If you are looking for some place for local handicraft shopping, San Kamphaeng is a great choice.  Here, you will find traditional Thai handicrafts such as crafts silks, weaving, wood carving, silverware and lacquer ware.  It’s located just only 13 km. east of Chiang Mai. 
     
Bor Sang
Umbrellas are manufactured here in Bor Sang where villagers have been engaged in their manufacture for at least 200 years. All materials - silk, cotton, sa paper (manufactured from the bark of the mulberry tree) and bamboo - are produced or found locally. Shoppers can select their own taste of their favorite umbrellas for there’re numerous choices.  
     
Baan Tawai
Baan Tawai Village, is famous for local wooden crafts such as furniture-screens, chairs, tables, beds, indeed anything bearing a wooden surface or large enough to be carved. You can also find carved elephants, figurines, tableware and other popular items.  The village is located in the Hang Dong district which boasts many other great shopping areas as well. This is where many of Thailand’s hotels and hospitality businesses shop for their furnishings.  It’s 11 km. south of Chiang Mai and is a great full day or half day trip. 
     
Walking Streets
Many Walking Streets are available on weekends where roads are closed for tourists and locals to walk and shop for some goods, food, drinks and souvenirs.

Kad Sum Murd (Midnight Market)
Kad Sum Murd, which means Midnight Market, is also known as the Candle Market. It takes place in front of Kad Suan Keaw department store on every Thursday to Saturday from 6 p.m.-11 p.m. There are candles already lit for you to see what’s available in the shops. This market is just around the corner from Lavender Lanna Hotel and across the street from SoHo Bar.

The Wisdom of Lanna Arts & Craftsmen Walking Street
This market showcases art from 21 villages.  It is located at Buak Kang, Sankamphaeng District, every Saturday from 4 p.m.-11 p.m., where it covers allover 4 km. of area.

 

Wualai Walking Street
This market is at Wualai Road every Saturday from 5 p.m and is becoming a must visit for many tourists. The market is famous for its selections of handcrafted silver items.

Ratchadamnoen Walking Street
This market is along the moat at Tha Pae Gate every Sunday from 5 p.m.to midnight. This market is more popular with the locals than the Night Bazaar, and it is a fun and unique experience with the many shops, dining stalls, buskers, performances, and more.  
     
Nimmanhaemin
This small road is the new chic and hip district fro Chaing Mai and offers an array of designer boutiques where one can find many one-of-a-kind items. There are famous Thailand designers here including Gong Dee Gallery, Wit's Collection and Gerard Collection, whose designs are becoming very famous in Bangkok and beyond. Other items for sale on “Nim Road” include very original hand-painted ceramics, water hyacinth furniture, lacquer home décor items and much more. Located near Chiang Mai University. 
     
Tha Pae Area
In the city centre and where many of Chiang Mai's prestigious shops are located. There are shops like Living Space, Lost Heavens and Nova Collection are well worth visiting, each selling unique and beautiful products. There are also the general tourist shops selling silk, handbags, hill tribe artifacts, handicrafts and other great souvenirs.  Only trouble for tourists is there is limited space for parking.  So, walking there or taking a bicycle is the best way to reach there.
     
Shopping Malls
Central Airport Plaza and Kad Suan Kaew are both famous indoor shopping malls.  Airport Plaza is perhaps the most upscale of the two and offers an upscale Northern Thai Village area where one can browse for Thai handicrafts inside in the air-conditioning. 

Kad Suan Kaew offers the city’s only Central Department Store. This mall can be accessed from the back gate and parking lot of the Lavender Lanna Hotel.  
     
JJ Market
JJ market was originally created with purpose of providing Chiang Mai's finest arts, craft products, clothing, accessories for garden or house, luxurious and unique home décor and souvenirs.  If you are looking for quality arts and crafts, it is well worth a visit. There are also a number of nice dining options here including The Steakhouse by the same folks who own Le Crystal.
